Review of Field of Dreams (1989) by Dawdlingpoet — 21 Nov 2021
This is a quirky, imaginative film. Its hard to know how to take it - I certainly felt sorry for Ray and wondered what the truth of the situation was. While it undoubtedly features fantasy elements to the plot, the film takes place in quite a mundane setting.
I don't know much about sports and certainly not about baseball but it wasn't necessarily all about that. I liked how Rays daughter reacted. There are some nice, friendly characters present, like Shoeless Joe Jackson and the author, Terence Mann, played by James Earl Jones. Obviously it would appear to be based in indulging someones delusions, which may be thought of as a bit tactless or suchlike but I thought it was a nice watch overall - its certainly not offensive, other than there being one or two sex references mentioned, in relation to racy content by a controversial author complained about in one scene.
Its a charming, mostly family friendly film. There are some cheesy moments but I guess thats to be expected of a family friendly film - its not one for sceptics, thats for sure. Its a bit of a fun watch that I'd recommend. There's something undeniably charming about the innocence of it.
