Review of Field of Dreams (1989) by Shane V — 24 Dec 2009
Ray Kinsella is a humble corn farmer in Iowa. One day in the field, he hears a voice; "If you build it, He will come." And so Ray builds a baseball diamond out of his corn field, & takes his family on a ride into a world of fantasy that neither they, or the world, will ever forget.
The acting was fantastic. Costner brilliantly pulls off our odd hero, and makes him appealing in all the right ways. The plot is a simple mix of fantasy and reality, and easy to comprehend. I know next to nothing about baseball, and I got every word of it. The 'emotional' moments aren't played up too much (or maybe not enough?). As previously mentioned, the acting was fantastic, but not just from Costner. The whole cast really brings their all. As a person who never really got into baseball, I still found this extremely heart-warming and a bit sentimental. This is a movie about discovering the magic in life, and does so very well. Being a book adaptation, the plot is all about heart. It doesn't quite finish the story as well as I'd like, but the movie overall delivers quite an emotional punch, as well as a few slaps of comedy every now and then. I laughed quite frequently, even if it does just boil down to chuckle humor. I give "Field of Dreams" 10 spontaneous decisions out of 10.
And another thing is great dialog. Which is why I can't pick just one line.
