Review of Fever Pitch (2005) by Robin W — 05 Oct 2008
With the Boston Red Sox potentially on the way to winning their third World Series in five years, it's easy to forget the time when Sox fans thought their team was cursed and would NEVER win another championship; this film conveys that frustration perfectly, and as a long-suffering fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Cubs, I can certainly identify with.
The Farrelly Brothers forgo their usual raunchiness to deliver a sweet, likable romantic comedy that is an affectionate tribute to their favorite baseball team, which will have extra appeal to those familiar with Red Sox history, and even to non-baseball fans who can understand the hardship of trying to balance a passionate hobby with a serious relationship.
The film's ending had too be drastically rewritten when the Red Sox actually DID win the 2004 World Series, but the movie does a fantastically clever job at mixing in the real-life events with the characters' story.
