Review of Fertile Ground (2011) by Devon W — 31 Jul 2011
In short: Pacing was bad, editing was massively confused, effects were cliche, atmosphere was nonexistent, and acting was meh.
This movie is so confused at what it's trying to be. It claims to be a horror movie while the editing seems be ringing more of some weird 90s coming of age film (What is up with those title cards popping up every ten minutes. Do I need to be told that, at this point in the movie weird crap is gonna happen?) The music is inappropriate, they overuse stings as if they think certain things constitute massive jump scares when they aren't scary in the slightest. (OH NO, a painting is weird! No way guys! Jump scare!!).
There are a few, thoroughly sad moments where it's obvious they were trying to create some sense of creepy atmosphere but it really only boiled down to a chick wandering around in her PJs for no reason. The acting isn't... bad, I suppose. But I didn't give a crap about the characters at any point. I'd be willing to say that was more the fault of the script than the actors.
Best thing I can say for this movie is that it exists... Somehow.
