Brilliant and charming, this film is the apogee of John Hughes' trademark themes and characters. The eponymous teenager suavely navigates all the ridiculousness of school and family life and still manages to have a great time.
The breaking of the fourth wall, the droning of Ben Stein's economics lecture, the detailed instructions on how to pretend you're sick, almost every scene is classic. This film takes the particulars of being a teenager in the 1980s in the midwest and turns it into artistic and cinematic perfection.
