Review of FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992) by Kirsten B — 18 Aug 2008
I add this because as a film lost in the sands of time (for me at least) it was fantastic to catch it in a cinema the other day! I saw this once before, when I was eight, back in 1992, and I couldn't turn this opportunity down!
As a film, it is not without its flaws. (afraid I am partial to a biased opinion in regards to childhood memories!) It is an incredibly deliberate eco-awareness film to the point of the the forest fairies feeling the trees' pain, and the evilness of industry being depicted as a vile, devil character shown made of tar, smoke and as a blackened burning skeleton.
But, given the huge effect me and my friends remember it having on us, planting trees etc, it can't really be seen as a bad thing.
Its a fun and completely innocent film, and reminds me of a great time of animated films, and included what must have been some of the first 3D animation mixed in! I was impressed too at its dark streak; the villain Hexxus, a spirit of destruction is visually unpleasant (yet sinisterly handsome at other times - Hades from Hercules is practically a copy) to being down try scary! I think this is why I liked it as a film; I've always appreciated films which aren't afraid to step away from the "twee and good" and give some credibility!
The songs are... unique to say the least!
