Fences may be one of the best acted movies of the year, and if you don't mind watching a film that is basically filming a play then you will really enjoy it. However, I was disappointed with the translation from stage to screen.
This looks like a wonderful play, and I felt like I was watching a play. However, I expected more on the screen. Don't get me wrong, Viola Davis and Denzel Washington are at the top of their games here, but I guess I kept waiting for something more.
Washington also directed the film and I felt he could've taken some chances and broadened this thing where a play is limited with space. To see these two do what they do best may be the worth the price of admission, and Washington plays the anti-hero better then anyone.
However, be prepared for a slow mover.
