Review of Fences (2016) by Rennie O — 06 Jan 2017
Great film treatment of a most memorable character. I was born just a few years before the period that starts this film, and I can testify to the accuracy of the period reflected here. Both Denzel Washington and Viola Davis turn in award worthy performances.
The only criticism I might have is that the director chose to make this a film of a play. I think the cinema deserves better--if you want to film a play, that's fine. But if you are going to make a play into a film, take advantage of what the medium offers.
