Review of Fences (2016) by João P — 31 Jan 2017
I left this movie in awe. How could someone be so talented to write a play of this magnitude and how could there be actors who could learn all those lines and keep me captivated? I felt like I was watching a play and not a movie.
I think having only a few scenes forced me to focus on the issues and the dialogue. In my own life, I spend a lot of time seeing how people fair by the important people surrounding them. It tells me everything I need to know about a person.
Troy Maxson is a garbage collector for a symbolic reason. Denzel does an amazing job showing the damage that a selfish and self centered person can create and the need for fences in his, his family's and friend's world.
The ending is disappointing but Denzel and Viola do such an amazing job, I could have kept watching for hours. I wouldn't be disappointed if either or both of them came home with an Oscar.
