Review of Fences (2016) by Gael C — 17 Feb 2017
I don't have any problem with Denzel Washington's direction. It is a very powerful story with a lot of humanity and it, most likely, wouldn't have been as powerful if it wasn't for Denzel and Viola's performance.
They definitely carry the movie, as it should be when it comes to a stage play. My main problem is that this is a movie and it did make me think that it would've been better if I was watching it on stage.
On a stage play, a writer can get away with characters doing a lot of exposition. But movies are a visual medium and I would've preferred to have seen most of the things the characters go through.
But It doesn't mean that it's poorly written. In the end It's a movie that people should watch for the performances.
