Review of Fences (2016) by Jorge L J — 11 Mar 2017
We don't see a 'Black' film for ages and then three come along at the same time. In the last three weeks we have seen 'Hidden Figures', 'Moonlight' and now 'Fences' and all are brilliant.
'Logan' too was brilliant. 'Fences' was better than I had anticipated from the trailer. The film is adapted from a stage play and is driven by the dialogue between the characters especially between the central couple Troy and his wife Rose.
The acting is emotionally affecting does justice to the script which tells the story with depth and directness. Fences is set in the 1950's and the film does a good job in evoking the period and the life in a working class Black community at that time but the theme of a relationship that is more than good enough betrayed by a greed for something more is, of course, universal.
Very much worth watching.
