Review of Fences (2016) by Connor M — 02 Jun 2017
When I first saw the promotional teasers for this film, I wasn't expecting much. I'm a fan of Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, but it didn't look like there was anything too special according to the trailers.
This movie is based on a play by the same name, and both Washington and Davis were the main stars in the Broadway play as well. I read the play earlier in my English class, and I enjoyed it very much, so after reading the play I was a lot more interested in watching the movie.
Throughout the movie I was mesmerized by all of the performances across the board, and I thought the casting was perfect for this film. This is one of Denzel and Viola's finest performances, and I'm happy that Viola won an Oscar for her role.
Every scene is either tense or attention-grabbing, and sometimes both, but these scenes wouldn't have been able to do it without its talented actors. The biggest issue I had with this film is that it doesn't explore to many sets or locations, so we are basically watching a play but on the silver screen.
Other than that, there isn't much to complain about this film. It's well-directed, acted, and written, and it's one of Denzel's best-directed films. If you are a fan of phenomenal acting and dialogue, then you will love Fences.
