Review of Female on the Beach (1955) by Sausages M — 14 Apr 2011
Crawford is great in alternately flirty then fatalistic scenes of overt misogyny, casting backward glances and sporting some amusingly large white shorts and a gold lame sleeping costume. Chandler's Drummy spouts completely insane lines about the importance of women fearing men as the basis for their love, and she reacts at first warmly to the abuse.
You also get Schafer in familiar beachwear paired with Kellaway instead of Jim Backus, as a negative example of romance gone sour. As if the Howells went desperately wrong - their scheming opportunism provides comic relief and comments back on Joan and Drummy's prospects.
This film is still only available from an old AMC broadcast or from hardsubbed Spanish tv, but perhaps will someday show up elsewhere.
