Review of Felt (2014) by Kyle D — 29 Jun 2015
Saw this for free, on a lark. The lead actress & director even did a Skype Q& A after. That's how I learned this: in real life, the director became fascinated with an artist he met (at a bar?).
She makes (among other things) genitalia out of felt. He followed her around for a long time (six months?) and shot a bunch of footage. Eventually, a plot of sorts emerged, and they were able to edit the footage into this film.
That's the straight facts on how it was made. In terms of my personal experience - I found this film to be tedious and pretentious. Everyone in the film is unlikable, and the narrative clunks along in a series of "and then this happened" scenes.
Many of the audience members attending the Q&A were in love with the idea that this film was a boldly feminist story. I feel that is giving this film far, far too much credit. It's a dude with a camera following around a nutty girl who is obsessed with genitals in a childish way.
And then, at the end, she does something "shocking." Yawn. One star for getting this thing released and fooling some folks into thinking it says anything of value.
