Review of Felidae (1994) by Chloe L — 15 Aug 2009
There is a line in Stephen King's "Pet Semetary" that pretty much sums this movie: "Cats were the gangsters of the animal world, living outside the law and often dying there.".
Felidae takes us inside that brutal world, and as the protagonist of the story Francis warns at the beginning, it isn't pretty.
At first glance, Felidae looks like a children's movie. The rather flat animation and the fact that the main character is a cat makes this look like a throwback to older Disney animated movies. However, when Francis comes across the mutilated course of a local cat, setting the mystery into motion, it becomes clear that this isn't Disney.
This is your basic film-noir murder mystery with a good helping of foul language (for a cartoon anyway), sex, and loads of gory violence. The main thing that sets it apart are that all of the characters are cats. Humans are rarely seen, and when they are, their faces are rarely shown (only once, in a dream sequence I think).
Does anyone know who did the voices in the English version? I heard a rumour that Carey Elwes did Francis, but I couldn't find anything supporting this. A mystery in itself...
A good movie to check out if you are in the mood for something other than your standard American fare (Felidae is German). Strange movie, but I really enjoyed it.
