Review of Fed Up (2014) by John M — 06 Mar 2016
The film took WAY too long to makes its points, and spent WAY too little time focusing on solutions and villains. There was some good information, but it could have been conveyed with more punch in a quarter of the time.
In a nutshell:
*sugar, in all its forms, is the culprit, not fat.
*no mention of glycemic index.
*little to no description of what a healthy diet looks like.
*one can be obese "on the inside" without looking obese on the outside: it's a matter of percentage of body fat, and where it is located (belly fat is the worst).
*sugar is addictive, like tobacco, and sugar companies lie for profit, like tobacco companies did.
*no inspiration at the end: no success stories, no information about what families and companies could save by people eating better.
*their suggestions at the end were mostly conservative and unimaginative, and tacked on as afterthoughts - just as they were in An Inconvenient Truth.
*insurance companies own lots of stock in fast food companies, apparently because their stellar performance helps compensate for the payouts insurance companies make as a result of the influence of fast foods on the health of the insured.
Very disappointed to say that I can't recommend it very highly. I think Morgan Spurlock's Superzise Me was harder hitting.
