Review of Feast (2005) by Robert P — 22 Jun 2010
Oh man, awesome gorefests are hard to come by. Usually, gorefests are just a little too over-the-top, or they take themselves a little too seriously, and they're not gory enough. This movie strikes the perfect balance. There are so many incredible deaths here. A guy's head gets bitten off, the monsters hump deer heads, people get slimed on, blood squirts everywhere, and limbs start flying. And none of it is done with the intent of being serious. This movie wants you to enjoy all of the ridiculous deaths, and indeed I did. The movie is filled with cliched characters, and it does so purposefully. It makes it a lot more fun, because you're already familiar with all of the characters since you've essentially seen them in other horror films. Having these characters here makes it more exciting, because you're just so eager to see if the makers will break the rules. For instance, every character gets a synopsis background, and one of the characters is stuck in a wheelchair. His life expectancy reads, "They wouldn't kill a cripple would they?" Well, you'll just have to find out. If you're in the mood for a good gorefest, you have to check out Feast. It will rock your socks off!
UPDATE: This movie doesn't hold up to rewatches very well. It really doesn't. I'll give it 3 stars just because it was very entertaining the first time, but after you watch it again, the seams start to show through. Sure, there are some nice deaths like I mentioned above, but the movie too often drags because much too often the purposefully cliched characters keep talking and talking. It's okay if the writer and director wanted one-dimensional characters as part of the joke, but if you're going to have characters like that, you better make sure they're always doing something that's entertaining. And that just didn't happen here. It's fun the first time, but after that, you really can't watch it again without getting a little bored.
