Review of Fearless (2006) by Tom B — 09 Jan 2009
Jet Li delivers a powerful lesson in how to resist western imperialism, all be it set in the early 20 Century. Ribetting action tale of pride and redemption. Nationalist in the same way as A Bridge Too Far and other similar war films are.
Late Qing Dynasty China is being over run by Western Allies disrespectful of the host county (sound familiar?). The film pushes all the right buttons and mostlyh in the right order: Nation, family, respect for intellect, discipline and orderand dedication.
Epic scale fable based on real life events . Laced with double meaning and contemporary resonance. Plus the wu shu is exhilerating, at its best au naturelle without the CGI.
