Review of Fearless (1993) by Ms Amanda J — 19 Apr 2011
The beginning surprised me nuts. What do you know - Eli walks through the corn fields AGAIN! Let us give thanks to He Who Works Behind the Cameras for going with a most jaw dropping and hair raising coincidental setting to introduce the character of Byron Hummel.
Makes it seem that Daniel Cerny was typecast in the few films he was in - the actions that his characters take are quite consistent - but I love him in all of them!!!!!!! Maybe the casting director of COTC3 saw him at the beginning of this film and said, "Boy, that kid sure looks good with the corn stalks.
Let's put him in our movie!" Daniel Cerny was too little used in Fearless though. He was The Kid in Demonic Toys and here, he's essentially The Boy again or The Boy Sitting at the Front Without His Father.
They should've just given him a vague name as such cause he's only in a few scenes! There could've been a million things added to the storyline regarding the boy and the hero who saved him.
Daniel himself was probably peeved that he wasn't featured more, which is probably why he was kinda off during one scene. When the reporters come to Max's house and Byron follows, he sounds like he's reading a script (I can see the ellipses on paper as he's talking) but good acting is hard to do and it's tough to "be there" totally, in all fairness.
On the other hand, in Children of the Corn 3, Daniel's every line was uttered with conviction and his expressions were natural and never hammy or strained, which is why he was good in that. That is hard to pull off and to do that at a young age is impressive! The flashback scenes of the explicit crash in Fearless contained some effective acting from Daniel though: the expressions conveyed give sparks to the scenes and were just emotional enough to make them pop.
