Review of Fear of Fear (1975) by Karl S — 09 May 2009
At times it may seem melodramatic but the crucial moments in this film make it real. fassbinder has made a simple film that focuses on one issue for the first 2/3 to 3/4 of the film and when it switches gears it defies our initial assumptions.
the acting seems a bit stiff at times but perhaps intentionally so, but there are a few moments in the clutch that elevate the film. notably the scene where the widow breaks down. its a story about intolerance in the beginning, and then switches to human connection in the last.
its a film thats rough around the edges but has a heart in the end.
