Review of Fear of Fear (1975) by Viginti T — 16 Jul 2009
It is disheartening to watch an issue film over thirty years since it's release and find it even more relevant now then it ever was, still though I found the experience of watching this my first Fassbinder to be very enjoyable. There is a definite message inherent in this film that is meaningful and very well handled, it's real joy though comes from it's emotional core. The romance and relationship that forms the central conceit of the narrative is not treated as just some hypothetical used solely to push upon us this ideological situation, it's real and because of this the critiques that the film does offer are so much more powerful.
A very low key film on the surface but emotionally and mentally it is an instantly gripping maelstrom that keeps you in it's grasp long after the credits end.
