Review of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) by Dan S — 06 Sep 2013
Look, I love Terry Gilliam. LOVE HIM. I think he is by far one of the most creative and important filmmakers in the past 30 years. And I've even defended some works of his that many people consider to be absolutely terrible, but I really think critics were spot on here.
It's not a terrible film, it has some great performances from Johnny Depp & Benicio Del Toro, and yes, the hallucination sequences are visually stunning & highly creative, but in terms of a tone, this movie is fucking frustrating as all hell.
I am a fan of Hunter S. Thompson, and I do think that the source material for this film is definitely worth it's cult status, but it's just one of those books that in my opinion is far too complex and nuts on it's own to be translated onto film in a decent enough way.
Still love you, Terry, but this is not a good film.
