Review of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) by Laura R — 26 Sep 2013
I first watched this when I was younger- close to graduating high school and I thought it was awesome. Well, it still is awesome- probably the funniest drug induced antics in a movie ever. Highly quotable, and THAT was Benicio Del Toro? That was Tobey Maguire? Fantastic star cameos.
As I got older though I caught on to the dialogue when it wasn't trying to be funny, it talked about the times changing, the subject matter very dark, and ended with almost sappy sentiment. I still will always love this cult classic.
Sure, it went over the top and it appeals to a certain demographic with a dark sense of humor and who love dialogue and deadpan humor. I mean, the scene where Gonzo is stuck on the merry go round bar is pure epic.
"Holy moley" I do admit though, it can grow old and I also admit when I've had my fill I've turned it off without watching it all the way through (I've seen it so many times). Still love it though- don't go into it trying to make sense, it's not meant to make the sort of sense you're expecting.
