Review of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) by Jonathan S — 13 Jun 2012
So. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This is very much a "love-it-or-hate-it" kind of movie, which is typical of many of Gilliams film. I rather enjoyed it and personally think Terry Gilliam is the only man who could make a movie based on Hunter S.
Thompson's book. To call this movie "weird" of "strange" is an understatement, it is by far Gilliam's trippiest film to date, literally! Johnny Depp is at his best in his role of Raoul Duke/Hunter S Thompson and Benicio Del Toro is equally superb in his role as Dr.
Gonzo/Oscar Zeta Acosta. I did not think it was nearly as disturbing as people make it out to be, with the exception of maybe one or two scenes, I have seen far more depraved and unsettling films. I would really only recommend this movie, however, to either fans of Terry Gilliam, who should be used to his unique directorial style, or those who enjoy something a little different and obscure.
