Review of Father's Little Dividend (1951) by Mackenzie S — 15 Aug 2007
This sequel to 'Father of the Bride' stars Spencer Tracy as the patriarch of a family coping with their newly married daughter and her recent pregnancy.
The original was a heart-warming tale of a father who learns to embrace the chaos of weddings, while this film had the same father dealing with being a grandfather as well as having a baby in his life.
Tracy is good in the sequel, however his narration is more uneven and he comes off very unlikable due to the way he detests babies. Elizabeth Taylor plays his daughter without much difference from the original, still sweet and naive, however it is interesting to see her deal with how uncomfortable being pregnant is. In the 1950's, childbirth was more miracle than torture and this is a nice change of pace.
All in all, it is not as charming as the original, but it is still a refreshingly real-esque look at marriage in the 1950's.
