Review of Father and Son (2003) by Deep K — 16 Apr 2005
Being a big fan of Russian Ark, I could hardly wait to get this DVD. At least in the U.S., I think a lot of people who will see this film will wonder if there is a sexually-romantic relationship between father and son (son sitting naked in father's lap eggs it on) more than just an uncommonly seen type of intimacy that is void of lust.
I have to admit that I watched this at about 5am while half asleep, but despite that I still found those intimate situations to be quite prickily and bewildering. I'd like to think I'm pretty open-minded to situations, but I'm not sure how to totally process what I've seen.
There's no doubt that real relationships exist in this form, but putting it in cinematic form feels a bit like having sushi and wasabi for the first time, multiplied by 100.
There seems to be several forms of anguish being dealt with here.. the loss of loved ones, the questionable health of the father, a maturing son's questioning of himself, his relationship with his father and his budding relationship with others outside of the family. It appears that near the end both were preparing for a new reality which would not exactly carry over their special relationship with one another.
