Review of Fatal Attraction (1987) by Nathan C — 24 Feb 2012
Arguably, one of the most well-known and referenced movies in history. Does it live up to the expectations? No, not really. Oscarworthy? Not even close. It's predictable and even dated, but it's also super effective. Everyone, even the casual viewer, knows the plot: Married man has a one-night.
Stand with chick. Married man tries to cut off all ties, but chick wants to still be involved with him. Chick is so obsessed to the point that she would kill for his love. Yeah, even if you don't see it at all, you're not missing much. However, what makes it worth watching is the great acting by Michael Douglas (who can do this role in his sleep) and Glenn Close (who plays it smoothly) and the increasing psychological tension between the two. Visually, it adds to the tension by showing a darker side of New York and having the camera cruise through it. Some suspenseful moments, fine music, and a decent - but shallow - script just add icing to the cake. Honestly, I would've enjoyed it better if I haven't seen "Obsessed" and "The Roommate" first.
