Review of Fat Albert (2004) by Timmy M — 03 Dec 2012
I'll try not to be to harsh here, but then again what is there to be said for a film that is based on a 1970's cartoon and adapted for a modern day audience? We have seen this again and again. However, in the characters that Bill Cosby created with the Fat Albert gang, the heart and soul of the characters cannot go unnoticed.
I mean literally, I just sat through 100 minutes of dry old humor and Keenan Thompson's bad acting and then at the end Bill Cosby took a kind of shocking turn and gave the audience a sad yet heart felt conclusion to the film.
It is in the final scene of this movie where we see Cosby stand along side all his old friends from Philly at the grave of the man who inspired Fat Albert, Albert Robertson. For a movie that spent 100 minutes depicting characters from a cartoon trying to fit into the real world by means of a dry and often boring script, the audience gets a punch right in the gut at the end.
.. Or should I say a tug at the heart. I'll admit, I have never been a huge Cosby fan, but for some reason Fat Albert is one cartoon character that has stayed with me into adulthood. If it weren't for the sappy and somewhat awkward ending to this movie I wouldn't have even written this review.
So my final words on this are don't buy it rent it. And lastly, hey it's a freaking kids movie. Cut it some slack!
