Review of Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) by Lauren N — 10 Mar 2009
It's obvious why this film was considered one of the most risque and iconic high school comedies back in its day. It's the Superbad of 1982, but watching it nearly 30 years later, it seemed to have lost its edge.
The film may have dropped its balls pretty far at one time, but over the years the standard keeps getting a little further. In a post Judd Apatow world, it is hard to appreciate comedy that came before it.
But there is enough here to be entertained, especially in Sean Penn's nearly iconic role as a slacker/stoner that likely defined the role for later actors like James Franco in Pineapple Express. Plenty of guest roles from future stars like Matt Dillion and Nicholas Cage that will have you playing a celebrity I Spy.
Watch it for Penn, watch it for its balls, but don't expect a comedy classic.
