Review of Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) by Mike L — 05 Sep 2009
The American Graffiti of the 80's, a group of relative unknowns got their start and most went on to bigger and better things.
A teen movie about the last year of high school for a group of SoCal students. It works mostly because it includes all the groups of most high schools and how they act and the underlying psychological nature of most high school students, namely their insecurity and their desire to fit in. Most of the funny moments involve Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli, a stoner surfer, his friends and his interaction with his history teacher, Mr Hand (Ray Ralston, of My Favorite Martian).
The seminal scene is when Phoebe Cates gets out of the pool and takes of her bikini top during a masturbatory fantasy by Judge Reinhold.
A timely, funny, and somewhat factual take on early 80's teens.
