Review of Fargo (1996) by Dawdlingpoet — 23 Nov 2021
This is a somewhat quirky, small town type drama watch. The plot is a little slow paced perhaps and its not constantly action packed but its intriguing enough to keep you watching regardless. There are good performances from Buscemi and McDormand (perhaps slightly less so from William H Macy) and some fairly amusing aspects of the very much dark comedy plot.
I have to say I didn't find it overall an especially funny watch, in the way I maybe expected, given its quite a cult classic but its certainly not bad. I felt particularly sorry for Buscemi's character, Carl Showalter.
I note that the characters names are a bit quirky, much like the people themselves - somewhat animated at times, while also appearing physically fairly average. For a Coen brothers film, its not bad but not my favourite.
It seemed to me to be a tale of botched criminality, with the most memorable aspect being that its set in a very snowy and dreary semi-rural area of the US, which makes the red blood of the violence stand out.
It may make you cringe but yeah, I suppose I would recommend it overall.
