Review of Fargo (1996) by Sean N — 21 Apr 2014
Dark comedy is hard to do correctly. The Coen brothers deliver a quite insane comedy while being mind throbbing at the same time. There are many questions in the film about greed, power, and innocence.
Most of the questions come from the main viewpoint of a police woman who is trying to piece the mystery caused by a car salesman who weaved himself into trouble. The pacing is perfect and knows when to take a break and give a little comedic moment even though it's still bizarre to laugh at.
Dark comedy needs to be dark and yet still have a strong delivery and that can done wrong if done with no taste. Fargo has a great sense of how to do it write with scumbag characters and some innocent looking people who end ups trying to act calmly about everything even though he caused the whole problem.
In the end, there is a question of how far money and power can cause people to go too far and it is something that cannot be answered as our police woman just has to do her job and live her life.
