Review of Fargo (1952) by Brian T — 12 Aug 2012
The whole movie is a glorious contradiction, which makes it incredibly interesting. It's simple and very intelligent, it's murky and clear, it's dark and happy go lucky, its cold and it's warm, but it's always perfectly on the level. A clear sign of brilliance, complexity is crafted into elegance.
One of those films that you just enjoy watching the scenes because it captures detail so well, even though it is quite laid back most of the time. The storyline is set well early and goes all over the place, but holds it's own. The acting needs to be good and overdelivers.
It's pretty bulletproof in terms of objective critique. I was a bit dissatisfied with the ending, but I can't level that as a criticism, just more of a personal preference. I kind of wanted things to work out for Macy and his family, as twisted as his methods were. However, I guess that is part of the bitter sweet piece that is Fargo. Didn't totally hit the button for me, but it's definitely an excellent movie.
