One of the best crime movies of the 90's is delivered to us by the Coen Brothers with Fargo.

The dark subject of kidnapping and murder are contrasted by the stark, white, snowy scenery of North Dakota (represent!) and Minnesota, along with their chipper residents (pun intended?).

The northern Midwest accents may come across as the actors over-acting, but if you've spent any significant amount of time in the area, you know the mannerisms are not too far from the truth. (Oh gash, heck, dontcha' know.).

Steve Buscemi is brilliant as the sleazy, bumbling kidnapper, but the stand-out performance is Frances McDormand's oscar-winning role of Officer Margie. She is brilliant.

Darkly funny, surprisingly violent and beautifully shot by Roger Deakins (one of my favorite DPs), this is a great film to introduce yourself to the movies of the Coen Brothers, if you haven't already done so.
