Review of Farewell, My Queen (2012) by Rainer Q — 29 Jul 2012
When a movie tries to be complicated and contrived just for the hell of it, you end up with something like Farewell my Queen. The story narrates (in a rather heavy way) the events 3 or 4 days after the siege of the Bastille to jumpstart the French revolution.
The plot is largely seen through the eyes of the Queen's personal reader, who is clearly a notch above the cleaning staff but with unique closeness to the royals (and with some pretty lofty aspirations). She is very educated and seemingly smart. We can only infer she must be pretty exceptional since being a literate servant must have been quite the rarity in the late 18th century.
What's missing in this movie is something that goes beyond the gossip and dark hallway conversations. We all know how the story ends and what happens afterwards so there could have been more details on meaningful things as opposed to some low level passing of information.
Farewell my Queen is a good art house movie and that's about it. It's not great in any way and it's not the most entertaining period piece you will ever see. Decent story if unsatisfying,.
