Review of Farewell My Concubine (1993) by Weixiong X — 26 Jun 2006
I wanted to review Farewell My Concubine. However I have something else I would like to speak about. Recently I have had anxiety problems. I won?t say why but Steph I know you?re going to read this and I want to tell you something. You are my inspiration and the reason I?m able to make it. You so amazing and beautiful and your so good to me. Other people could not put with my anxiety stuff and would have said the hell with it but you stood by me. .
You?re my wonderful girlfriend and I cherish you. I can?t wait to see you. I can?t wait to be with you. I hope when you read this you are happy. You make me happy and I wanted the world to know that. .
Farewell My Concubine.
This is a powerful piece of Chinese cinema. If you think that it mostly consists of martial arts films but there is so much more to Chinese cinema. Farewell My Concubine is a powerful example. Directed by Kaige Chen and starring Leslie Cheung and Gong Li. It tells the story of Peking Opera performers through the years. I marvel at the strength of the people of China and what they have had to endure this last century. I often wonder what would happen if a Cultural Revolution broke out in America. Now I know I speak as an outsider but that country basically went through hell during the last 100 years. Living really under 4 different regimes each crueler then the last. At least that how the movie portrays it. I found all the performances to be equally great and Chen?s direction to be superb. I don?t really know what I can add that had been said about this film. It?s amazing. .
China has always been a source of fascination for me. Not just the ancient history but the modern as well. The Cultural Revolution is something I have read about and sort of seen through Chinese films like Concubine. Imagine the chaos and hell if you simply did not agree with Mao. That astounds me. Well that all I can say later. .
