Review of Farewell My Concubine (1993) by Alan M — 05 Jun 2007
A masterpiece, purely and simply. Gong Li and Leslie Cheung give some of the best performances of their careers, with Li smouldering as the opportunistic prostitute and Cheung delving into the psyche of his lonely, yearning character.
Chen Kaige has masterfully interwoven these characters' stories with the huge cultural changes of 20th Century China, making for some horrifying and beautiful moments.
