Review of Farewell My Concubine (1993) by Elizabeth W — 12 Jun 2007
Haunting, beautiful, and desperately searching for profundity, Farewell My Concubine is an incredible artistic journey that asks us to go to a pre and post-Communist China and visit the world of the mysterious Beijing Opera.
The homo-erotic undertones and adult language (though subtitled) may scare off more easily offended viewers but this film is worth its three hours running time. A fascinating question is raised? Where is the line drawn between art and reality? Masterfully filmed with excellent music and performances.
Worth watching despite the subtitles and length.
