Review of Farewell My Concubine (1993) by Jessica W — 23 Apr 2009
This is a great film. Examines the effect the turmoil of politics in China during a very turbulent time (From the time of the warlords through the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, Nationalist liberation, Communist revolution, Cultural revolution) has on two opera stage brothers.
Powerful and moving at times. Shown in terms of the localised perspective of these two brothers (Don't expect any examination as to the source/history of the political landscape, or an accurate account of the widespread turmoil).
