Review of Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) by Laurie T — 19 Jun 2015
Far from the Madding Crowd is not only a beautiful adaptation with the Wessex countryside in full display, but it is finely written adaptation of the novel to feature Carey Mulligan. A glowing Bathsheba is presented throughout that is portrayed as an independent thinker and a free spirit.
She yearns for love, but only she can maintain her freedom. I have not read the novel nor have I seen the version that stars Julie Christie. I was not disappointed in this movie and find that it completely fulfilling.
Mulligan is a fine performer who is more grounded than ever as an artist. She is ably matched by Matthias Schoenaerts as Gabriel Oak and Michael Sheen as William Boldwood. This movie softly emboldens women to maintain their identity.
I am not certain if the earlier version did the same. The cinematography is top notch and the direction keeps the story humming along. The theatre was filled with an audience who were completely entranced at each new tribulation that Bathsheba faced.
Tom Sturridge and Juno Temple played their roles with complete commitment. This is definitely a film not to be missed.
