I went in knowing nothing about this - never read the book, heard what happens or seen any previous film versions - so I had no preconceptions at all. And I really enjoyed it (despite the typical Thomas Hardy misery!) David Nicholls did a great job with the adaptation, the visuals were great, Carey Mulligan was excellent and Matthias Schoenaerts even more so - he was superb in fact.
