Review of Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) by Adrian S — 23 Jul 2015
A no-frills masterpiece elegantly directed by Danish maestro Thomas Vinterberg and finely acted by stalwarts Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenarts who bring a lot of chemistry and much thespian heft to their challenging roles.
Considering the subject matter and themes set in a tough agrarian backdrop, this could have turned out to be a bleak and stuffy literary adaptation of that classic Thomas Hardy novel. Instead, it's a ceaselessly captivating and emotionally-charged portrait of how one good steadfast man stands dedicated by his belle to overcome life's adversity.
The ending packs an emotional wallop as it's a fitting catharsis of all the tribulations that came before. Well, as they say, the wait is worth it.
