Review of Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) by Emily J — 02 Aug 2015
I thought I would never love another version of this film (the 1967 being hailed all my life as my most favourite film) but this film worked its magic on me. The music and landscape swept me up into this well-loved and much remembered story even though at times I kept thinking, it was merely an upated version of the original.
I was disappointed that Boldwood's character was not explored earlier in the film, his loneliness, the bleakness of his homelife (to contrast later with the splendour of the Christmas party) and I was also disappointed that the two pivotal words in the entire novel were missing from this film: the words 'Marry Me' on the fated Valentine.
They may well have been on the red seal of the envelope, as they should have been, but there was no close-up or confirmation that the words were there. But somehow the film came up trumps - absolutely wonderful.
