Review of Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) by Ben H — 30 Oct 2015
This movie is a splendid film! Set your clocks back to Victorian, rural England and get your Hardy heart-throb on! It's a great ride through the English countryside and mostly true to Thomas Hardy's novel, although I don't quite remember the brief love interest of Ms. Everdeen in the soldier who plays such a central role in this movie. Chalk that up to an initial reading of the book. I'm sure the dude is in there somewhere!
Anyway, it's a great film! Perhaps a bit overly romantic, but worth every farthing. I recommend it highly for those who are fans of Hardy's novels (not to mention his poetry) and the Victorian, English backdrop.
The Gabriel Conroy character is splendid. This movie is a deal-breaker for him. And of course the actress playing Ms. Everdeen (Carey Mulligan) is sensational as always, playing a character who is all about business, but looking for Real Love at the same time. The whole cast is just marvelous. It was a genuine treat to see.
The movie is rated-R for some fairly intense scenes involving roaming sheep and some sensuality. Playing everywhere!
