Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Richard V — 22 Jun 2007
A stunning achievement. I was completely blown away when I saw it. It's one of the only movies that imitate a particular style and do it completely successfully. The acting and style of these 50's "women's pictures" are hard to relate to today and a modern movie imitating it can easily fall into style over substance.
But this movie is surprisingly emotionally engaging and true, mostly due to the fact that everyone involved took it very seriously, from the assured direction of Todd Haynes, brilliant performances by ensemble, and wonderful achievements by cinematographer Ed Lachman and the last score composed by Elmer Bernstein.
Please go check out this great movie that was one of the best of 2002.
