Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Shane L — 10 Aug 2008
Elegant and sumptuous in its presentation, Far From Heaven is a wonderfully told tale of one couple's American Dream and its slow descent into ruin. Although initially, the 1950's style of acting is a bit off-putting at first - I kept waiting for an emerging sense of naturalism a la Pleasantville, although it never arrived - it quickly begins to make sense in the overall palette that Todd Haynes uses for the film.
Performances by Julianne Moore and particularly by Dennis Quaid were absolutely tremendous. The score by Elmer Bernstein was the best I've heard in years. Highly recommended.
