Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Kevin B — 24 Aug 2008
four Oscar nominations: Best Actress (Julianne Moore), Best Original Screenplay (Todd Haynes), Best Original Score (Elmer Bernstein), Best Cinematograhy (Edward Lachman, A.S.C.).
continues Haynes' questioning of the cinematic image through the lens of melodramas, exemplified in films of Max Ophulus, Douglas Sirk and Rainer Werner Fassbinder by way of elaborate decor, symbolization of objects, color, framing, music, costuming and gesture.
Julianne Moore appears, once again, for Haynes.
What is (American Independent) Cinema? conceptual mode to question cinematic treatments of the past and their implications in contemporary culture (racism, homophobia).
