Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by John N — 10 Sep 2008
This gorgeous homage to the Douglas Sirk melodramas of the 1950s (specifically All That Heaven Allows) is the most satisfying film I've seen in years. Without ever veering into camp, irony, or parody, Todd Haynes lovingly recreates the genre to use it to tell a story that could never have been told in the 1950s.
Perfect in every detail, the crowning jewel of this film is Julianne Moore's transcendent performance, which should have won her the Oscar. A deeply emotional film of the sort that most filmmakers would not dare to make.
