Haynes shows us here that how the film looks can be as important as the story it tells. Far From Heaven looks like the '50's melodrama shot in the '50's. The story underneath are the ones covered up in the period.
This is Haynes genius: his postmodernist ability to throughly mimic style while deconstructing substance. I remember seeing the Apparatus shorts years ago. Each one that he worked on had the look of the original.
He is able to pull us in by giving us a what we know then rearranging and changing the elements.
