Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Cat J — 24 Sep 2009
A marvelous homage to the films of the 50's and 60's. great time was spent to recreate exactly the tone, look, and style of those films, and its amazingly refreshing to see such a well-done throwback.
the cinematography is exceptional, as it creates such a theatrical, dramatic look. there are no real blacks, just deep blues, and there are no real whites, just pure yellows. the movie itself is super-saturated, and with this movie, it fits.
dennis quaid is stunning. I usually see him as the disney nice-guy or the action adventure hero, but here he's a lost soul, perfectly crafted into a sympathetic and yet unlikeable character. julianne moore is, as always, perfect.
overall, though, I felt it lacked something. maybe the "gimmick" of recreating a mid-twentieth century-looking film detracted from the story some. just my opinion.
